Texas High School Trombone Choir

Competition

*UPDATE/ADJUSTMENT REGARDING THE SELECT PIECE REQUIREMENT*

​This is possibly the first statewide high school level trombone choir competition to occur in Texas. It is being held to promote unity and collaboration within trombone sections and trombone studios.

 

Here’s what to expect:

  • There is only one round, which is open to the public on the day of the Trombone Celebration event (May 11th) between 9-12pm. 

  • Each member of all participating groups will receive a Participation Certificate.

  • The winning group of each division (small & large) will receive a single trophy and members of the winning group will receive a medal.

  • All participants will have the opportunity to perform on stage with Toby Oft at the end of his performance in a mass trombone choir.

  • The piece students will perform with Toby Oft, Never Walk Alone (arranged by Tony Bianchetta), will be sent once the entry fee is received and it must be prepared prior to the event day. There will be a mandatory run through of this piece following the Toby Oft masterclass from 2:30-2:45pm.

 

Entry Fee

There is a $25 entry fee for each group (not each member of the group). Fees need to be received by or postmarked by the entry date deadline. Payment can be sent electronically or via mail.

Special requests

Requests for specific performance times will be considered. Requests will be considered based on travel issues and/or conflicts. Performance times will be posted soon after the April 11th deadline.

 

Rules/Requirements

  • Instrumentation/performers must all be from the trombone family.

  • All participants, with the exception of an optional conductor, must currently attend high school. The conductor can be a teacher.

  • Use of a conductor (or not) will not affect scores positively or negatively.

  • Ensembles must be accompanied by an adult if no adult conductor is used.

  • It is not mandatory that all members in an ensemble attend the same high school.

  • Each participating ensemble will need to prepare 2 pieces, one required piece and one select piece.

 

2 Trombone choir divisions (small & large)

 

  • Small Division Trombone Choir is for 5-8 performers (not including the optional conductor)

  • Large DivisionTrombone Choir is for 9 or more performers (not including the optional conductor)

 

One winner will be chosen for each division.

There will be no overall winner chosen between the two divisions.

 

Repertoire

 

Small Division

  • required piece: Canzona (Marini, Biagio)

This piece is written for a quartet, however all performing members must play. Doubling will be required. Please let me know if you're having trouble getting this piece.

  • select piece: Your choice.

There is no required amount of parts for your select piece. The piece must not exceed 8 minutes in length. Any part(s) can be doubled by the 5-8 members of the ensemble.

 

Large Division

  • required piece: Tower Music (Nehlybel, Vaclav) 

This piece is written for an octet, however all performing members must play. Doubling will be required. Please let me know if you're having trouble getting this piece.

  • select piece: Your choice.

There is no required amount of parts for your select piece. The piece must not exceed 8 minutes in length. Any part(s) can be doubled by the 9+ members of the ensemble.

How to enter your group for this competition

  • Name of the group or the school(s)/ISD(s) affiliated.

  • Contact information for a person in charge of the group (email and phone number).

  • Which division (small or large).

  • Member amount and names participating in the group.

  • Conductor(s) name participating if applicable.

  • Title/composer/arranger/publisher of the select piece.

  • How you’d like to pay the fee.

 

Once your email is received, you’ll receive information on how/where to send the fee payment.
